Starting Saturday 17th November I’m doing 7 shows on BBC 6 Music with Edith Bowman as my co host. The shows will be in the 10am to 1pm slot every Saturday thereafter. These will be the first radio shows I’ve done on 6 Music since Joe and I were in Glastonbury in June 2011.

Joe is now busy with film projects pretty much full time now, which makes it hard for him to commit to doing the radio show regularly, which is a drag. I miss it/him. We could do the odd one-off I suppose, and I hope we will some time, but doing the live show with interaction from people listening week on week is hard to beat so I thought I’d give it a go with someone completely different and see what happens. FAQs: Why not Garth or someone from the comedy world? Garth is also busy with a new film and I wanted to avoid trying vainly to create a new comedy double act. I like the fact that Edith is more of a mainstream media person. It’ll just force things to be different I think.

It’s hard to avoid feeling like a parent undergoing a separation from their spouse and trying to explain to the children that I’m not trying to replace Daddy with the Scottish lady I’ve brought home. Daddy Cornballs will always be your Daddy and will always pour buckets of scorn on any fun things you’ve brought home to show him, but sometimes Mummies (albeit manly, bearded Mummies) just need to er, try doing a radio show with someone totally different because Daddy’s busy doing exciting films and Edith’s been really nice stepping in to help me out so please be nice to her. I guess you could think of her as Mrs Doubtfire. No wait, that would imply that Joe has come back masquerading as a weird Scottish nanny, and would also infer that Edith is like Robin Williams in drag, so that’s no good at all.

Anyway I’m doing my best to make these shows with Edith as different as I can without throwing out too many babies with the Cornballwater. In practical terms that means there’ll be some new jingles and ‘Text The Nation’ will be called ‘Memory Bank’. I don’t think Joe will mind if the odd familiar feature pops up now and then though; Edith has musical connections and is a legendary singer too of course so a ‘Song Wars’ bout isn’t out of the question for example. We’ll see how it goes.

Speaking of Text, I mean Memory Bank, our inaugural topic this Saturday (17th) will be MEETING YOUR HEROES so if you have any good stories you have on the subject please send them in. Could be times that meeting someone you greatly admire went well or times that you ended up wishing you hadn’t bothered for whatever reason.

The address for those stories and any other correspondence throughout our 7 week run is:

Clicking on that link should open up a new message in your mail app but if not, just paste the address into a new message.

  • Yes. I’ve been making some new jingles and I’m looking forward to returning to my shed with a glass of wine to check them out each week. Not sure yet how soon after the live show they will be uploaded. Should know by Saturday so will say on air.
  • No plans but not saying never. Unlikely to be any time soon though.
  • Despite my best efforts, they are seldom far away from me.
  • Indeed. It occurred to me that my original idea of just squandering them all on a junk food party might be a bit irresponsible on the verge of the fiscal cliff. Send any more philanthropic ideas to
  • That’s what I want to flipping know. I’ve reinstalled it and tried reinstalling everything from the back up but still no joy. It’s very distressing.

OK, that’s it for now. Off to make more jingles…

Til Saturday then!

love you byeeee!

Dr A Buckles.

  • please remove a rogue apostrophe from the plural form of ‘shows’ in para one. I simply can’t read beyond its evil and plain WRONG insertion. Disciplinary action will follow.

  • Apostrophes and email addresses should now be in order…

  • …as Joe is away pouring scorn onto the film world, can we have made up jokes, and egg corns and travellin tales back? -i also get the feeling Joe doesn’t like anything :-P

    Love you byeeeeeee!

    Comment by Liz Matt. — November 15, 2012 @ 6:19 pm

  • The actual link for the email address still has the and not even though the text is correct now…..and since people are being oddly picky in these comments, you’ve used the word ‘now’ twice in your first sentence about Joe and I find that a bit clunky. Other than those things, it’s a pretty good blogpost and I know you’ve missed us correcting you so you must be thrilled t be back in our safe haven of admonishment……

….but never mind that. This is all wonderfully exciting news and will give me a perfectly good excuse to not do any Christmas shopping on Saturday mornings.

I hope you have loads of fun doing this with the lovely Bowladyperson. x0x

  • Hello Big Daddy Warbux and E-bow just had to share this story of temporary insanity displayed on this occasion by my wfe. whilst driving down a beautiful B-road in the outskirts of Nottingham around dusk. my wifey wife suddenly turned to me and said the following words with complete conviction and all seriousness ” How do they know when to turn the Cats Eyes on?” To which I nearly crashed in a wild fit of laughter. she tried to tell me she was joking, but we both new that was a big fat stinky lie. afterwards she admitted that her brain must have swtched off for a moment and claimed temporary insanity. I tell this story to everone I meet and she hates me for it but its just too good not to share. David, male man Nottingham. luv you byeee.

  • I read on an internet that DLT was your first choice, but he priced himself out.

Apparently, when Edith stepped in, he dropped his price on the condition that he replace Adam. Any truth in this?

    Comment by Leonard Ectric — November 18, 2012 @ 12:34 pm

  • Adam, your black screen and white text REALLY hurts my eyes. I can’t read it anymore and when I look away I see all sorts of weird afterburn images. Anyone else getting this, or do I need to see a Dr really soon?

    Comment by Bob76 — November 18, 2012 @ 8:38 pm

  • Please force Edith to not be annoying!

    Thank you!

    Comment by Cam — November 19, 2012 @ 2:43 pm

  • Well, the show was lovely although it lacked my beautifully crafted synopsis of a relationship in easy to read bullit points. Adam loves a single sentence that allows him to spin in to some free association verbal gymnastics. Not this time though. I’ll be listening next week. Heres’ my grammar error. love youuuu Byeeee Andy

    Comment by Andy — November 20, 2012 @ 9:34 am

  • Just listened to the podcast – very entertaining and wonderful to hear you in my ears again. Although the Scotch lady will be no replacement for Joe, I can tolerate her well enough and find the whole package rather attractive.

One word of caution though. I totally mis-heard ‘Memory Bank’ as ‘Mammary Bank’ all the way through. I think it’s your posh voice.

It could be me, as I’ve just finished breastfeeding my fourth baby. But it did bring strange and unwanted images to my mind.

Otherwise great, 5 stars. Kate x

  • I really liked the explanation about why Daddy Cornballs is being replaced. It made me laugh out my coffee all over my keyboard.

But I’m sure we’ll all learn to love Auntie Edith.

This is far too late – (is there a Deja Vu Bank? (like retro TTN))

but I saw Magneto (Ian McKellan) on the tube.

No one on the carriage seemed to notice him.

    He was very incognito.

    Magneto Incognito.

I felt very happy about it for no rationally explainable reason (seeing him)

Then someone else told me they saw him on a bus a day or 2 before.

That surprised me. I really don’t know why Gandalf is running around on public transport.

  • My daughter has more or less grown up listening to the Adam and Joe show, and in it’s absence, to the Podcasts.

She was in the kitchen with me listening in a little sceptically to new Daddy when she asked ‘why is there music in it’. Kids eh?

  • Your new show just proves that Dr Buckles is indeed the squelchy substance that, when flung by the metaphorical monkey of the BBC, sticks to the proverbial wall of top radio based entertainment.

Every Morecambe deserves a Wise. Keep up the good aural (oral?) work Dr Buckles and Nurse Bowie!

  • I can help you with your dead hard drive Dr Buckles. I’m a forensic investigator and a big fan. Your podcasts helped me cycle across Australia for charity last year so I’d be more than happy to give something back :) Feel free to drop me an email if you still need help or sutin.

  • Please don’t let this be the end of Dr. Buckles! Whether you bring back the great Mixtape, or cohost with Boggins, the Queen, lovely Joe, or lovely Edith….we miss you very much when you are absent from Radio 6!

  • Adam, I just wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart, back in 2003 I recorded one of your TV series ”Adam and Joe go Tokyo” and it changed my life MORE than you could ever imagine, as a result of that fine show I’ve legally changed my name and I moved to Tokyo last year, I’m back in England, but I will be making a final permanent move in 2013, and the SINGLE very first instance of my attraction to Japan, came from watching you and Joe as a 15year old boy, you both changed my life, and essentially made me what I am today, more than my own friends and family, a thousand times thank you, I am forever indebted to you both.

  • OK, loving the show, BUT…

The Cornballs ‘Special Appearance’ episode of the podcast contained 100% less Cornballs than expected. But that’s not the weird thing… the weird things is that no one appears to have mentioned it… maybe even noticed..?

Have I uncovered some bizarre conspiracy..?

    What’s happened to Cornballs?

    Comment by Jon — January 17, 2013 @ 12:21 pm

  • Dear Buck Rogers, I’m a funny person I often make up jokes….I’m also aware I’m about 2 years late…But this evening I made up a joke that I think is the best one I have ever made up.

How many octopus does it take to make an octopie? 3.14159265359

It’s funny because pies are round and pi represents the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter.

6 music is for the 90′s generation, and as saturday morning telly is now shit, this is like the equivalent for not-so grown up late 20 and 30 somethings like myself. I know, i dont have a life, so dont take it away from me! Seriously, i’ll sing baby come back featuring pato banton as a protest…and i dont even HAVE his cd collection!!!

  • As a slightly younger chap, I absolutely loved your TV shows with Joe. I am ashamed that I didn’t know about your radio show at the time as I was not a particular radio fan, so had only brief reminders of your brilliance when I recognised you in various films. However, a week ago I came across your podcasts, and introduced you (and Joe) to my kids (16, 13 & 10) and like me, they absolutely love your work. I don’t know the reasons for you guys doing separate things, but there are 4 guys here waiting patiently for the day you and Joe grace the radio/TV air waves once more. In the mean time, I shall keep a much better eye on what you are doing. Thanks for the many hours of laughter you have brought and will bring in the future.
