I’m hosting the irreverent TV pop quiz Never Mind the Buzzcocks tonight at 10pm on BBC2. It’s my third time on the show. Last time Simon Amstell was hosting and I had fun (read about the fun here). The first time I went on Mark Lamarr was hosting and I had none (read about the none fun here)

Hosting is altogether more enjoyable. The producer and writers were great and keen to make me feel at home by incorporating whatever ideas I had for the show and Phil & Noel were welcoming as heck. I approached it as if I were getting ready for a show with Joe on 6 Music. First I made some jingles for the rounds. I haven’t seen the finished show yet so I have no idea how many of these they will use or how odd they will look. Look out for a reworking of my
BIG MIX TAPE THEME
in the jingle for the Intros Round (if they use it). I also customized the video for my Moby Song (that you may have seen if you’ve been to a Best Of BUG show recently) for use in the event of a tie break and I brought in a few You Tube comments to use for the final round, which worked nicely.

The taping itself went fine although my nerves prevented me from interacting with the guests, Margaret Cho, Reggie Yates, Beverly Knight and Dynamo in any meaningful way and my delivery of some of the scripted jokes was so rotten that the audience went silent and appeared to have been instantly killed on a few occasions. Thing is, I’m not too good at telling jokes, especially of the ‘Pete Townshend is a pervert’ Mock The Week variety. So anyway, let’s hope they keep all those bits in and make me look really shit and unfunny.

I also brought in a video of me, Joe and Louis Theroux dancing around to Deee Lite in my Clapham flat one fun filled Friday night circa 1990. Joe and Lou were very nice about signing release forms so the video could be used on the show but in the end I heard it didn’t make the cut because there was just too much other good stuff to cram in (Pete Townshend jokes etc.) I think Joe and Lou borrowed the baseball caps from me. I had lots, as well as a hairstyle that required an entire tube of fixing gel every other day and could be used to fry eggs and chop veg. I still have that lumberjack shirt/jacket thing. I had it all going on in those days. We wanted to put this on The Adam & Joe DVD back in 2004 but we couldn’t clear the music so fingers crossed I don’t get penalized for sticking it up on You Tube. Hope you enjoy Never Mind The Buzzcocks!

ADDENDUM
Seen the show now. Here’s the final jingle that got talked over by the continuity guy at the end on the terrestrial broadcast.

NEVER MIND THE BUZZCOCKS -- END OF SHOW JUNGLE JINGLE

I’M ON TWITTER AGAIN! @AdamRealBuxton

Let’s see how long I last this time. I can’t help feeling that Twitter just isn’t a medium to which I’m well suited, but someone told me I should get back on it after a BUG show in Liverpool last week and because I do everything that strangers tell me to do, I did. I’m hoping it might be useful for letting people know about upcoming shows in a pithy way and posting a few more links to bits and pieces that I’m enjoying, which I don’t really do often enough on this blog. I hope I’ll get some good recommendations back from ‘followers’ too. Glad that they’re known as ‘followers’. Makes me feel like Jesus! Ha ha ha! I should tweet that! That’s gold!

I love you bye bye bye.

As my life is gets more and more BUG shaped I thought I should explain once and for all what it is for those of you who’ve never been. Click on the WHAT IS BUG? heading at the top of the page if you’d like to find out more about the show, how I came to be involved and take a look at a selection of music videos that have made an indelible impression on me over the years. I’ll do a list of videos that have made a delible impression another time.

I’m doing two BUG shows at the Norwich Playhouse this week (same show Thursday 6th and Friday 7th @ 8pm), which will feature some of my favourite videos the last couple of London BUGs. Thursday’s show is pretty well sold out but as I write there are still loads of tickets left for Friday so if you find yourself east at then end of the week, come along and we can have a drink in the bar after. Check the events calendar to the right or click here to buy tickets.

WHAT ELSE HAVE YOU BEEN DOING DR BUCKLES?

Great question net pal.

CRABBING!

I went crabbing with my family in Southwold on the weekend enjoy the weird late summer sun. It was idylic. Crabbing is the shiz for children. Dangle a bit of bacon in a bag and the crabs can’t clamber on fast enough. Then at the end of the day you tip your bucket over and watch them all race back onto the sea. No one gets hurt! At least if you do it right.

DOMINATING THE AWARD WORLD!

Last week I went to the BT Digital Music Awards with the 6 Music team, Tom, Lucy, James and of course Joe who I hadn’t seen for a while. It was a fun night and we won our award (best digital radio show or podcast)! Still no immediate plans for a return to 6 Music sadly. We’re waiting for a good chunk of time to open up but it’s hard with me so busy doing BUG and crabbing. Joe’s got some commitments too apparently.

READING LADYBIRD BOOKS!

If you’re feeling deprived of my warm and friendly voice (and you’re under 10), here’s something I contributed to that may help. It’s a picturebook app that been very nicely put together and features the voices of people like Josie Lawrence, Simon Farnaby and Doctor Adam Buckules. My 3 year old daughter thinks it’s excellent and now I no longer have to read to her at night, giving me extra time to drink alcohol and gamble. Buy the app here. Once you’ve downloaded the app you can purchase books via your ‘device’. So far i’ve done Goldilocks, Chicken Licken and 3 Little Pigs. Think I’ll be recording some more titles in the next few weeks.

BEING A POSTER PONCE!

A few weeks back we did a short BUG show at the Kings Place festival. It was an enjoyable show but significant for me in that it marked by banner debut! When Joe and I were younger we always fantasised about being on posters and were always hoping we might make it onto a billboard or some such but it never happened. Now Joe’s well and truly popped his poster cherry and his name is on billboards round the world thanks to his film work but this was my first time as a giant poster ponce. Of course strictly speaking, aspiring to being a poster ponce is rather tragic and futile and you can sort of see that in my expression as I point to the banner. It’s a look of shame as people walk by and think ‘who’s that guy pointing at that poster ponce I’ve never heard of?’

Louise who is part of the BUG team, told me the other day that she was able to keep the banner and she’s going to send it to me. I haven’t run it by my wife yet but I plan to drape it from a tree near my house and aim some lights at it. That way visitors will know what kind of man they’re dealing with: Dr Buckles -- massive poster ponce.

UPCOMING BEST OF BUG SHOW NEWS!

Hey ha! What is up? I just got back from 5 sold out nights of BUGging at the Edinburgh Festival! Thanks to all of you who came and those of you who said hi after the show. Nice to meet you. The only slightly awkward moment was when a very nice lady tried to pat my leg while we were having a photo taken but accidentally patted my joolies because she forgot how short I am. At least I think it was an accident. Hey, there’s worse accidents, right?

For those of you who may not know, BUG is a show I host every couple of months at the BFI Southbank featuring a selection of top notch recently produced music videos as well as a few of my own contributions in the form of songs, ludicrous videos and the reading of You Tube comments. The Edinburgh shows (like most of the one off shows we do outside the BFI) consisted of some of my favourite videos from the last few BFI BUGs and more of my own bits than we’d normally have at a regular show.

If you haven’t been able to catch our recent Best Of BUG shows in Edinburgh and Bristol then there are more opportunities for you to do so coming up.

QUEEN ELIZABETH HALL, 4th September

This weekend I’ll be at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in the Southbank Centre on Sunday 4th September at 7.30pm as part of the Vision Sound Music Festival, the UK’s first festival of Music for Visuals. You can book tickets here.

KING’S PLACE FESTIVAL, 9th September

Then I’m doing a shorter version of the Best Of show at the King’s Place Festival on Friday 9th September at 8.30pm. If over 90 minutes of BUG seems a little excessive, (though why anyone would think that is beyond me) then maybe this is the show for you, plus it’s cheaper too! Book tickets here

GREENWICH COMEDY FESTIVAL, 10th September

Then we’re back with the full Best Of BUG show at the Greenwich Festival on Saturday 10th September at 3pm. Get yo tickles here

Can’t wait to see you.

RACIST VIDEO NEWS!

Here’s a video that relies heavily on outdated national stereotypes. I’ve road tested it on living mates from Australia and so far, no beat ups, but it is most certainly retrograde, reductive and cheap so I might steer clear of my local Walkabout for a little while.

Did I mention that I’m very fond of you?

Goodbyeeee!

Dr A Buxstein

THERE’S A BUG ON YO FRINGE

Hey you! The blogsteady crew!

We’re taking BUG to the Edinburgh Fringe this year! We won’t be doing the whole 4 weeks because I’m no longer young/determined to be on TV/insane, but I’ll be there for the last 5 nights from 25th – 29th August at The Pleasance (10.30pm each night).

The shows should be around 90 minutes and will consist of my favourite music videos from this year’s London BUG shows as well as You Tube comments and a few of my own music and video bits and pieces, some of which would be familiar to people who have seen me doing non BUG live stuff recently. It’ll be more or less the same programme each night though the fun of doing a little run like this is shuffling things about and introducing new nuggets here and there from show to show. I’m a nugget shuffler.

I’m looking forward to being back in Edinburgh hugely. In many ways I feel I am Scottish. Half English, a third Australian and half Scottish. So I hope you’ll come and join me for what promises to be a very moving half-homecoming. Altogether now: “Och, Mr Henderson! You’re horting ma totties!”

Book tickets for EDINBURGH BUG HERE

Here’s a couple of old Adam & Joe directed music vids to get you in the mood. That’s my Dad (BaaadDad) in the Frank Black vid and the promos we spoofed in the Gorky’s vid were Addicted To Love, Bittersweet Symphony, Song Two, Firestarter and No Surprises. Though I have no doubt in my miniature mind that Frank & the Gorks would be happy for me to post these (they were the official promos in both cases), it’s a little nerve wracking to post anything with commercially available music in it nowadays. I feel as if You Tube is just waiting for me to put a foot sufficiently wrong and my channel will just vanish in a puff of fartsmoke one morning. I know I could just not post anything that was problematic, and indeed I have been holding back a few things that I think would increase the hotness of the rights water too extremely but really, can’t a guy have some fun with the music he loves after all the money the guy has spent and continues to spend on this shit? Especially as we have to watch ads in front of an awful lot of You Tube content now. (In Australian accent) Come on mate! Ease off! Yeah? Mate!? Daphne?

BUG MUSINGS

Nice to be home after a busy week with a couple of bill paying jobs as well as three BUG shows and Song Wars composition. I don’t usually have so much going on in a single week and a couple of times I felt things got a bit cock shaped. I’ve had a few somewhat disgruntled messages from people who were at one or other of the two BUG shows we did at the BFI on Thursday 19th May. We were doing some more filming of You Tube comment recitals but I went a bit overboard and decided to film three in each show, breaking up the flow rather and subjecting the audience to my shit ups and retakes for the camera. I had hoped that the filming wouldn’t detract from the audience’s enjoyment of the show, but for some people it ended up being more disruptive than I had anticipated. Apologies to anyone who felt short-changed. We won’t do it again!

Despite filming gripes, I thought it was one of the best selections of videos we’ve had at BUG in a while, thanks as ever to curator David Knight with help from Phil Tidy. Many of the videos we’ve featured in previous shows are archived in playlists on the BUG You Tube channel though this month’s show may not be up there yet. Here’s a couple of my faves from BUG 25.

Manchester Orchestra -- Simple Math (Official Music Video).

Last week was also the first time I have ever visited Manchester (!) for a BUG show at the Zion Arts Centre in Hulme organized by Mike, one of the two people who came to see my one hour live show in New York last October. I thought the Manchester show went pretty well and I hung out for a while afterwards with some of the people who came along. I felt like an art student again! Thanks to everyone who was there and especially to Helen Davies who presented me with knitted versions of myself and Joe for which I am profoundly grateful. I see Helen has blogged about our meeting too, here. She might like to know her beautiful creations are sat in the celebrity enclosure of the shelf in my studio. I have every intention of returning to Manchester for more BUG shows later in the year when maybe I’ll get to see more of the city than I did this time. As far as other BUG shows outside London go, I’m also hoping we might pop up at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this year with a ‘best of’ show. I’ll let you know when I hear anything definite.

AUDIENCE QUESTIONS

A few of my recent live shows have included a couple of questions posed by the audience from my Technical Meltdown show a few months back at the BFI. I’d like to try and make this a semi regular feature so if you ever have any questions for me that you wouldn’t mind me reading out and having answered at a live show, please post them in the comments section below, including your name etc. I’m meeting Moby for a BUG special next Wednesday 1st June, so if you have any questions you’d like me to relay to the baldy dance & sample genius then you can add those too.

SONG WARS

Don’t forget to vote for Song Wars this week. You can Garth’s magnificent Twister song on the BBC blog here as well as my own Party Pom Pom song (though the word ‘song’ is really stretching it), which if you wish you can right click on and download for keepsies below. Email VOTE ADAM or VOTE GARTH to this address: adamandjoe.6music@bbc.co.uk

PARTY POM POM

In case you’re interested, here’s a charmingly animated video of the conversation a few years back on the 6 Music show (when there was more of a ‘zoo’ type atmosphere in the studio!) that inspired the song/noise in the first place. Cheery bye ho pom pom!

Love Adam

A few weeks back I went on Matt Lucas’s radio show And The Winner Is…, alongside so hot right now comic/very nice ladywoman Shappi Khorsandi and impressions legend/very nice human man Rory Bremner. I had kind of put panel shows on my ‘never again’ list but Matt Lucas is different. I remember sitting in Matt’s tiny caravan dressing room in 2001 on location for an episode of Randall & Hopkirk Deceased that I had a tiny part in. Matt was feeling blue having had some project or other knocked back by the BBC. We had an enjoyable moan about how hard it is to get things done on TV. Though Matt was getting very well known from Shooting Stars he felt that he and Dave Walliams were never going to get anywhere, having been plugging away for years without ever really making a mark beyond a loyal cult following for Rock Profile. It’s a shame things never worked out for Matt & Dave but I’m glad I was able to throw Matt a bone by appearing on his radio show. I’m an amazing person. Fun quiz: can you spot the one of my stinky old jokes here that I used on another radio show a while back? If you correctly identify the joke and the show it was in I will let you know and then nothing else will happen. This is a fun blog isn’t it?

love Dr Buckholes

ADDENDUM
I hadn’t actually heard the show before I wrote this post. Turns out the joke I was referring to never made the cut! As Rob commented below, it was indeed a gangster joke that I’d used in the radio pilot ‘I’m Spartacus’, a film quiz that Jon Holmes came up with a year or two back in which I’d referred to a gangster called Mickey Football, so called because one of his testicles was shaped like a foot. I know, it’s a peach isn’t it? Anyway, I remain unimpressed by my panel show skills and, despite Ed’s over-generous assessment of my darkest day on HIGNFY, they remain a fixture of my ‘NEVER AGAIN’ list.

LISTEN AGAIN TO ‘AND THE WINNER IS’ HERE

ADAM READS OUT COMMENTS FOR THE APPLE MAC MUSIC VIDEO

Here’s something that the BUG team filmed at BUG 24, The Directors Cut on March 25th 2011 at the BFI. It was a good night despite the fact that I was in the grip of a full blown cold/chesticle infection as you may be able to tell from my voice and somewhat gruesome appearance. Also there’s the bowler hat. I’ve convinced myself this is a good look for me having worn it for our Song Wars Volume 2 photoshoot, but I was also wearing it at BUG because we were showing Garth Jennings’s Radiohead vid that night. It makes me look like a hairy Oddjob here.

The You Tube comment reading at BUG and my own shows is something I’ve been doing for around 3 years now. There’s a few videos of me doing it as part of the BUG playlist (here’s me reading out comments for Enter The Ninja by Die Antwoord) but I think this one gets closer to making it work for You Tube itself. I would still like to try an audience free version commenting on newer videos, more in the style of one of You Tube’s in no way irritating fast-cut behemoths but that may have to wait til I’ve got too much times on my hands again.

To get the most from this video you need to have seen Dennis Liu’s Apple Mac Music Video first. We showed it at BUG when it came out back in 2008 and it was one of the first that I read out comments for. A reminder that these are real comments. If you’re insane you can go and find them for yourself. Don’t hassle the commentators though. That’s how wars start. Hope you enjoy it and do leave your own comments on You Tube or right here on my new look blog, which I believe allows you to sound off beneath posts now. OK, I’m off to write a song for Kate and Wills.

Love Adam

I blog the same way I make love. Infrequently but spectacularly. Or should that be, badly and you’ve seen it all before. Either way, with the best will in the world I can’t seem to make it happen more than once every three weeks to a month. I’m talking about this blog now.

6 MUSIC

Since my last post Joe and I announced that we’re starting a 12 week run of shows on 6 Music from Saturday 2nd April (2011) in our usual slot (10am – 1pm). I’m mainly nervous that the chest infection I’ve had for the last few weeks (the stubborn legacy of my Christmas stint of illin’) will mean that every time I laugh listeners will be treated to a wheez that sounds like a tramp trying to start a car that he and his tramp friends have just hauled from a pond. The doc (not Dr Sexy sadly) gave me some Amoxycillin yesterday so I’m sure that’ll clear it right up in no time (is my pro-biotic sarcasm dripping through OK?) Even if it halts the wheezing by the time I’m back on the radio there may be evidence of lightheadedness, insomnia, confusion, anxiety, sensitivity to lights and sounds, and unclear thinking. A normal show in other words! Ha ha ha. You thought those were side effects caused by the Amoxycillin but it turned out that’s what I’m always like! You fell for it!!

Speaking of the show, the big news is that we are in the process of completely reinventing the entire programme. There’ll be 10 guests every hour, all of them plugging their new book/CD/TV show/film/charity exercise/unhinged philosophy, and every interview we conduct with them will leave you confused and depressed. In between interviews there’ll be a lot of music by Bruno Mars who is also providing us with new jingles and a new theme song. Features like Text The Nation and Made Up Jokes are to be replaced with new interactive features like Where You Callin’? wherein people tell us where they are calling from then hang up, and Weather Whot, which gives callers an opportunity to tell us very briefly about the weather where they are (I thought of this and I think it’s a good one).

We’ll also have a fuck of a lot of stuff about Charlie Sheen. There’ll be regular ‘Sheenews’ updates, ‘Winning!’ mashups and Charlie jingles along with a lot of Sheen based humour and banter. Joe wasn’t really up for this stuff but I forced it through and I think it’s a winner because everyone is focused on Charlie right now and you need to give people what they want, even if they don’t realise they want it or don’t need it or even if they actively resist it.

Needless to say I can’t wait to be back. I’ve missed doing the show a lot. On a serious note (not that the other stuff about all our new features wasn’t serious of course) Joe and I are both heavily indebted to Andrew Collins and Richard Herring who stepped in for us all those months ago then ended up making our lovely warm slot their own despite not really knowing how temporary or not the arrangement was, quite an enervating position to be in I’ll warrant. I don’t imagine for a second our 3 month return spells the end of the line on 6 for them, but anyway, wanted to say thanks.

In the meantime, you can help us with our first show back by getting in touch with any personal anecdotes you may have accrued in the last 15 months(!) since we’ve been away. I know that’s a bit vague but if your message is sufficiently interesting we will almost certainly fit it in to a special edition of ‘Anecdotties’ between the Charlie Sheen stuff and whichever Bruno Mars songs we’re playing.

E-mail your enjoyable anecdotes to adamandjoe.6music@bbc.co.uk (not ‘Adam&Joe’ as a hairy moron put in a blog post recently) and please use the subject header ANECDOTTIES!

COUNTRY MAN 3!

Here’s the latest episode of fun fieldism from Monty BH. There should be another along next month. Thanks to Jamie Johnson who helped me shoot the bits where the camera is moving.

IN YOUR FACE!

I did this when 6 Music was saved last year but really it’s a timeless piece of music suitable for any victory celebration, as long as you’re happy to celebrate like a tool.

Til next we do meet, keep your room nice and neat.

BUG AT THE LEICESTER COMEDY FESTIVAL, FRIDAY 18th FEBRUARY, 2011

I’ll be doing two BUG shows at the Leicester Comedy Festival this coming Friday evening at 6pm and 8.30pm. The shows will consist of a selection of my favourite music videos, web interestingness and You Tube commentary from the last few London BUG shows so it should be fun packed and of course, inspiring! Although the shows are being billed 1 hour in length I’m hoping we might be able to go over that on the night.

There’s also a chance for you to win an extraordinary goody bag of special Adam & Joe and Dr Buckles related offal that I have put together specially, including a super rare Adam & Joe Show tee shirt (plus not particularly rare ‘Best Of’ DVD), in insanely rare copy of Ken Korda’s director’s commentary for an entire episode of The Priory, a so rare that it hardly exists hand made DVD compilation of highlights from Shock Video, a copy of Adam & Joe’s Song Wars Volumes 1 & 2, plus other amazingballs that I’ll stuff in there before I get on my bike and head for the station on Friday. Click on the link below for tickets and details of the competition. Really hope to see you there.

GET TICKETS FOR BUG AT THE LECIESTER COMEDY FESTIVAL HERE

First of all, happy new year, although if you’re anything like me you’re struggling through the bleak wasteland of post excessive guilt, income tax payments and anxiety about the future that is the miserable month of January and willing the rest of the year to start properly thereafter. In the meantime, here’s some Dr Buckles flavoured wiffle to stick in your pipe and smoke if you haven’t given up.

If you want to read about a week of ludicrous luxury I was lucky enough to spend with my wife in the Maldives last November thanks to the Guardian Weekend travel section, you will be able to do so this coming weekend (29th January) when I believe the piece is due to appear. My Dad, Nigel Buxton (a.k.a. BaadDad) made his living as a travel writer and still writes about his twin passions of walking and wine. He encouraged me to write about holidays I took as a teenager but this will be my first published travel piece as a (sort of) grown up man. I think Paul Theroux will almost certainly be quaking in his boots.

BUG YOU TUBE PLAYLIST NO.1!

Towards the end of 2010 we held a special mini BUG in the Paradise pub in Kensal Green. We showed a few of our favourite videos from previous BUG shows as well as some newer ones and filmed the whole thing in order to share it with you on a You Tube playlist.

In theory the link below should take you to a page that plays my intro with the music videos and the rest of the links laid out in a row beneath, all ready to start playing automatically when each clip ends. The great thing about this format is that you can skip whichever bits you get tired of and move on to what looks interesting at any point. It’s the future of TV I tell you! Except, so far there’s no money in it whatsoever so it’s hard to say why we’re doing it, other than for love, which isn’t such a bad reason. Anyway, it’s only our first attempt so there’s vast amounts of room for improvement but see what you think and please do pass on the link to your pals.

WATCH BUG PLAYLIST NO. 1!

In other BUG news, I’ve been increasingly aware of people getting peeved that they’re unable to buy tickets for shows because the BFI members get first dibs and the remaining seats tend to get snaffled in block bookings from our sponsors and other eager beavers. My advice is to sign up to the mailing list because tickets always materialise on the day of a show and notification to that effect is sent without fail to those on the BUG list so you should always be able to get a ticket if you really want to come along (though of course if it’s last minute we can’t 100% guarantee). Just send your e-mail details to info@bugvideos.co.uk and you’ll be among the first to know about new shows, tickets etc. We are also thinking of doing one extra show every couple of months which should make it a lot easier to get tickets but that deal isn’t completely done just yet.

TABERNACLE HEADLINE SLOT, Thursday10th February, 2011

Yes, I’m back at this charming and comfortable Notting Hill venue, that boasts tables, chairs, toilets, drinks, food (I think) and a giant video screen for around 45-60 minutes of laptop based jinx that should be mid to high. If you’ve seen me doing live stuff within the last year or so there may be a few bits you’re familiar with but there should be some fresher morsels too. It would be a terrific treat to see you!

BUY TICKETS FOR FEBRUARY 10th HERE

Cheery ho bye!

Love Adam
